Some words used to describe how to be sensible are: reasonable, having good sense, with reason, and practical. All of these describe perfectly the nature of the relationship we should have with Christ and His Word.
I would like to start with a blog taking a passage in Deuteronomy and evaluating it sensibly. That passage is found in chapter 10 verses 12-15. This is a passage that shares with us direction God gave to the children of Israel and can be useful for us to apply in our walk. It is divided into 5 parts: to fear Him, to walk in His ways, to love Him, to serve Him, and to keep his commandments and statutes. We can practically break them down and apply them sensibly.
To Fear Him
To fear God is simply to take him seriously. Fearing Him is to fear His justice and to fear losing His work in our lives. This is not something God does as retribution, it is something we do when we stop recognizing the benefit of walking with Him and go our own way. Contrary to popular belief, God does not turn his back on us as he always sees the blood of Christ in stead of out sin; however, we do turn our back on him.
To Walk in His Ways
Walking in the ways of God is to live out his philosophies and to apply His will in our lives. Christ teaches us to pray that Gods will be done on earth as it is done in Heaven. A reasonable perspective is to have Gods vision, to understand His purpose and apply His thought process to our decisions.
To Love Him
Loving God is not any different than being in love with God. In our daily relationships we often fall in and out of love with each other. Loving God is realizing He never falls out of love with us. It is pursuing God with our whole heart as if He was the most important thing in our lives. Seeing Christ as the bridegroom and talking to Him as our partner as He is the only real soul mate for each of us. It is a dedication to Him as the ONLY one. This does not interfere with our physical relationships, but strengthens them when they are in unison, and focused on the same goals and outcomes.
To Serve Him
Serving God is similar to walking in His ways. It is simply following after what He wants and desires. It is aligning our goals and ambitions with His purposes. Many people try to serve God by following rules and standards and we can easily miss the mark this way. Gods purpose is revealed in the work Christ did on this earth. God wants us to serve Him in the same way Christ served others; in love and peace.
To Keep His Commandments and Statues
Keeping something is to value it enough to not throw it away. Keeping Gods commandments and statutes is understanding the value of the principles of life so much that we apply them to living. The principles of life are found in the commandments and statutes (determined rules) God has established through creation and His word. An example of a statute is found in Galatians 6 where God tells us we will reap what we sow. Don't forget the greatest commandments are to love God and love others.
As we seek to know God and what he desires from us, it is important to be sensible in how we approach our study of His Word and apply it in an equally sensible way. May God bless you in your study.
